Ahmedabad
city is located in the state of Gujarat, in the western part of India. It
lies along the Sabarmati River. King Karandev ruled the city called Karnavati
that was conquered by Sultan Ahmed Shah, who founded Ahmedabad in AD 1411.
In 1572, Emperor Akbar seized Ahmedabad and made it an important business
center. The British seized Ahmedabad in 1818 and set up a number of textile
mills here. Ahmedabad is rightly called the ‘ Manchester of the East’.
In the intervening period Aurangzeb, Peshwas Raghunath Rao and Damaji Gaekwad
ruled Ahmedabad.
Ahmedabad is world famous because of Mahatma Gandhi's Ashram. Its walled
city has a number of traditional colonies. Ahmedabad has some of the finest
examples of Indo-Saracenic architecture. The Ahmed Shah's Mosque, Mosque
of Sidi Sayid, tombs of Ahmed Shah and his queens, Jama Masjid, Teen Darwaza
or Triple Gateway are major monuments. Other important monuments include
Raj Rabri Mosque,Rani Rupmati's Mosque, Siddi Bashir Mosque, Rani Sipri's
Mosque, and Hathee Singh Jain Temple . Kankaria Lake , Kutbi Mazar, Bhadra
Fort, Dada-hari-di-Vav (an architectural step well), Victoria Gardens ,
N C Mehta Museum of Miniatures and Calico Textile Museum are also important
places.
