Amritsar
at distance of about 450 kms from Delhi is the largest and most important
cosmopolitan city of Punjab. Guru Ramdas Sahib, the fourth Guru of the Sikhs,
founded the city in late 16th century. He is also credited with laying the
foundation of the most revered of the shrines.
Later, it was the fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Sahib, who envisioned and executed
greater expansion and beautification of the shrine and the town. The aura
of Golden Temple cannot be explained in words. The spiritual solace that
it provides can be gauged from the daily visit by thousands of people.
Places of Interest
The Golden Temple
Hari Mandir - is an imposing three-storied structure with gilded dome surrounded
by golden turrets. There is filigree and enamel work in gold inside the
Temple, while outside the sacred tank surrounds it. The grand celebrations
here are the birth anniversaries of the Gurus and Diwali.
The Jallianwala Bagh
The Jallianwala Bagh is the Memorial, which commemorates the sacrifices
of hundreds of men, women and children who were victims of ruthless firing
of the British forces in 1919. People visit it from all parts of the country.
The Durgiana Temple
The Durgiana Temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga. It is replicated in the
style of Golden Temple and is visited by great number of people daily, particularly
during Navratras.
