Bhopal

The
picturesque city of Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, is set around
a lake and is famous for its archaeological wealth. Today, Bhopal presents
a multifaceted profile. On the one hand there is the old city, with its crowded
market places, huge old mosques visible from far afield, and the other opulent
palaces of the former Begums. Among modern attractions, the Bharat Bhawan
is certainly worth a visit. It is a uniquely designed art complex with an
art gallery, a workshop for fine arts, a repertory theatre, indoor and outdoor
auditoria and libraries of Indian poetry, classical and folk music.
Bhopal is said to have been founded by Raja Bhoja in 11th century. Old city,
mosques and palaces of aristocratic and powerful Begums in early 19th and
20th centuries enhance the scenic beauty of Bhopal. The new city of Bhopal
is more aptly planned with parks and gardens, and modern amenities dominated
by two lakes.
Bhopal in its existing form is believed to have been founded by Dost Mohammad
when he fled Delhi during annihilation of Aurangzeb. He sought the assistance
of Gond queen Kamlapati, who was known to spread nuances in the lake on
moonlit nights.
