Kollam
Kollam was earlier known as Quilon. Situated about 71 km north of
Trivandrum and standing on the famous Ashtamudi Lake, Kollam is an old time
sea port town on the Arabian coast. It is said that the present town of
Kollam was built by a Syrian Merchant in the 9th Century A.D. Today it is
the headquarters of the
Kerala State Cashew Development Corporation.
Many a foreign traveler, mainly Persians, Romans and Chinese, has visited
Kollam in the early medieval period. The visit by
Marco Polo to Kollam
and other places in Kerala is traced to 1275. The later trading visitors
were Portuguese, Dutch and British in 16 th, 17 th and 18 th century respectively.
Kollam became one of the early centres of Christian activity in Kerala.
The improvement in the commercial activity is attributed to Velu Thampi
Dalawa of Travancore, who brought in the merchants from Madras and
other places. He is said to have subsequently organized rebellion against
the British during independence.
Refreshing Activities
At
Ashtamudi Lake, different types of boats, including luxury cruise
boats, power boats and motor boats can be hired for enjoyment.
Mahatma Gandhi beach lies just 2 km from the town. It is a fascinating
place for an evening visit.
Thirumullavaram beach is 5 km from the
town. The sea here is ideal for swimming and bathing. The 144 ft.
Thangassery
Light house, built in 1902, is a centre of attraction.
Sasthamcottah, 19 km from Kollam, is a beauty spot, a health resort
and a centre of pilgrimage. The extensive fresh water lake called Queen
of Lakes is said to be the biggest of its kind in Kerala. The place is now
being developed as eco-tourism destination.
There are several Temples, Churches and Mosques of historical importance
