Periyar – Thekkady

Periyar. The earliest sanctuary to be set up in 1934, it extends to 800
square kms & forms part of the high mountain ranges, in the Western
Ghats on the Tamil Nadu border where one can expect to see elephants, bison,
antelopes, sambar and wild boar. The big cats, tigers and leopards are most
elusive and an occasional glimpse can be had in the dry months, when they
emerge from the interiors for water. Exotic waterbirds as well as hornbills,
blue-winged parakeets, whistling thrush and fly-catchers are also found
near the lake. There are plenty of observation towers set up around the
reserve to view wild life. A trip on the launch down the river is the best
way to observe the bird and animal life of the Sanctuary.
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is the pride of Kerala. This nature’s splendour
with a spread of almost 800 sq km is situated on banks of Periyar Lake –
an artificial lake at Thekkady. It is one of the declared Tiger Reserves
in India. The 360 sq km of high ranges of the Western Ghats are clothed
in dense evergreen, moist deciduous forests with savannah grass lands. Below
this thick green canopy roam herds of elephants, tigers, sambars, Nilgiri
langurs, and lion tailed macaques.
The greatest attractions of Periyar are the herds of wild elephants that
come down to play in the lake. The world's most fascinating natural wildlife
reserves, this is the only sanctuary in India where you can closely watch
the wildlife from the safety of a boat cruise on the lake.
Besides elephant rides, other attractions are Mullaperiyar Dam across Periyar
River and treks to the ruins of once most beautiful Mangala Devi temple.
