Rishikesh

Rishikesh is one of the holiest places of the Hindus pilgrimage sites. Located
in the Garhwal region of Uttaranchal it is situated on the banks of holy
river Ganges. It is called the birthplace of Yoga and is thronged by sadhus
and pilgrims every day. It is the Mecca for peace seekers.
Rishikesh is a place of many legends like penance of the sage Raibhya Rishi
and by Lakshmana at Tapovan; Lord Vishnu vanquishing the demon Madhu; Lord
Shiva drinking the venom that came out during the churning of the ocean,
etc. Most of the pilgrims who pass through Rishikesh on their way to the
Himalayan shrines of the Char Dham pause for a holy dip and puja at Triveni
Ghat. The river here looks especially spectacular during evening Aarti.
The Bharat Mandir nearby is Rishikesh's oldest temple, dedicated to Lord
Vishnu.
Rishikesh abounds in temples and ashrams (hermitages). The prominent amongst
them being the Swarg Ashram, Parmarth Ashram and the extraordinary Kailashananda
Ashram, with each of its thirteen stories dedicated to a different deity-are
always filled with devotees.
Besides the religious fervour of the devotees, Yoga and Meditation are also
followed with equal piousness at this Yoga capital of the world.
For the trekking and adventure lovers, Rishikesh is a good base to start
for trekking tours into the Himalayas. Rafting is possible at couple of
places.
