Shirdi

Shirdi is in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state. The saga of Sri
Sai Baba of Shirdi started in the middle of the 19th Century when, as a
boy of about 16 years of age, he first appeared here under a neem tree absorbed
in a hard penance. Popularly known as the 'Child of God', Sai Baba preached
tolerance towards all religions and the message of universal brotherhood
for the next about 60 years. He devoted his life for the upliftment of the
poor and suffering.
His origin, religion and early life are shrouded in mystery and though he
is believed to be an incarnation of lord Shiva, his teachings transcended
all religions and beliefs. On Tuesday, the 15th of October, 1918, Sri Sai
Baba entered his samadhi. Dwarkamai Mosque where the Baba meditated and
slept on alternate nights kept the dhuni or eternal flame burning day and
night is continuing even today. Thursday is marked by special pujas and
darshan of the Sai Baba statue. Today, all places, persons and possessions
connected with him, too have become objects of veneration by millions of
devotees who journey to Shirdi every year from all parts of the world.
Other places of importance are the Gurusthan, the Khandoba Temple, Shani
Mandir, Narsimha Mandir, Changdev Maharaj Samadhi and the Tapo Bhumi.
