Sikkim

Sikkim is an enchanted land of almost 200 monasteries
or gompas, with well preserved cultural heritage reflected in the lifestyle
of the people. The monasteries are adorned with frescoes along with silk
and brocade thankas. The devoted lamas robed in red can be seen in peace
with nature chanting ancient mantras mingled with the whirring prayer
wheels.
Sikkim is surrounded by Nepal to the west, Tibet (China) to the north, Bhutan
to the west and the Indian state of West Bengal to the south. Sikkim, a
state lying in the northeastern part of India, is one of the more physically
accessible sections of the Himalaya. Accessible from the Indian state of
West Bengal, the Sikkim has some of the loftiest mountains in the world
that find favour with the trekkers and mountaineering expeditions. In the
olden days, this region was known as Basyul - the hidden land.
Sikkim has an enthralling mix of flora and fauna. The Red Panda, an endangered
animal, and the symbol of Sikkim, is found in the mountain forests heights
of 6,000 to 12,000 ft above sea level. The other wildlife members are the
Himalayan black bear, brown bear, panda, and yaks, numerous species of deer,
blue sheep, goral, Tibetan antelope, tiger and leopard. Sikkim is home to
the elusive Snow Leopard and the rare Clouded Leopard. The presence of these
animals in the forests is announced from the tree-tops by pheasant, partridges,
quail, eagles, barbets, Himalayan cuckoos, and Tibetan black crows. And
last but not the least, of the 1,400 butterfly species that exist in the
Indian subcontinent, Sikkim is home to almost 50% of them.
