Vaishno Devi Yatra

Vaishno
Devi shrine is one of the most visited pilgrimage places of India. It
is located in Jammu region of Jammu & Kashmir state, 5200 feet above
sea level.
The legend goes that more than 700 years ago Vaishno Devi a devotee of Lord
Vishnu, having taken a vow of celibacy, used to pray to Lord Rama. One day,
Bhairon Nath, a demon-God, tried to behold her. He gave Her a chase in the
Trikuta hills. The Goddess when needing to quench her thirst during the
chase shot an arrow into the earth from where water gushed out at place
now called Banganga. Her resting place here has the imprints of the Holy
Feet is called Chanran Paduka. The Goddess then went on to meditate in the
cave at Ardhkawari. It took nine months for Bhairon Nath to locate Her.
But Mata Vaishno blasted an opening at the other end of the cave with Her
Trident.
She assumed the form of Maha Kali and cut off Bhairon Nath's head, which
fell at the place where the Bhairon Temple is now located. As per the legend,
the boulder at the mouth of the holy cave is the petrified torso of Bhairon
Nath who was ultimately granted divine forgiveness by the benevolent Mata.
The Aarti at Bhawan is performed twice a day, first at sunrise and again
at sunset. The process begins with bathing of Lord Ganesha, Surya and Chandrama
symbols. The priests chant out loud the 108 names of Goddess Durga. This
is the only temple in India where all three Goddesses Maha-Lakshmi (middle),
Maha-Saraswati (on the left side), and Maha Kali (on the right side.) are
worshipped in the same place. There is a lamp here that is always lit.
